Connected Equipment
Traditionally, MOT test results have been manually entered into the DVSA MOT Testing Service (MTS), which is used to record the results of the various parts of the MOT test and, also, to print out the MOT test certificate.
Toward the end of 2019, The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), announced the introduction of Connected Equipment for MOT testing in the UK. Essentially, this is equipment that automatically connects to the DVSA to electronically record the MOT test results, reducing the necessity for manual input of results.
Initially, the only equipment covered was roller brake testers but over recent years, the requirement has expanded to include decelerometers, diesel smoke meters and exhaust gas analysers. Headlamp Aligners will be added soon.
Where mandated, all new or replacement MOT testing equipment must be able to connect to this new electronic recording service.
There are a number of advantages to having MOT connected equipment, these include:
• Reduced MOT fraud
• Reduced human error
• Increased garage efficiency
• Reduced costs
• Remote access to connected equipment allows quick-fix solutions or diagnosis, saving time and money
• In the future, connected equipment will have further benefits as the MOT Test develops to cover aspects of ADAS, Electric Vehicles and even Self-driving / Autonomous Vehicles
In addition to entirely new applications, any MOT centres that have historically tested Class 4, 5 and 7 vehicles, must install connected equipment if they are:
• Opening a new MOT centre
• Reopening a closed MOT centre
• Changing ownership
• Replacing existing MOT equipment, where connected alternatives are available and enforced
• Adding an extra test lane including new MOT equipment
