MOT Test Equipment

The equipment you need to undertake MOT Testing will depend on the class of MOT test you want to offer. It’s true that if, for example, you have a Class 7 bay and suitably qualified testers you can undertake Class 4 and Class 1 & 2 tests but using equipment that’s been designed specifically for a particular Class makes life so much easier.

If you’re replacing equipment, then you’ll need to be aware of the latest rules concerning ‘connected’ equipment and if you have bought an MOT station you might need to upgrade some of your equipment. The team of specialists at ISN Garage Assist are fully up to date with the latest DVSA requirements and will guide you through the maze of regulations, giving you all the help and advice you need to ensure you get the best, fully compliant equipment solution for your MOT bay

Class 1 & Class 2

It is possible to undertake Motorcycle MOT tests on equipment designed for four-wheeled vehicles but if you specialise in motorcycles and you plan to make the Class 1 & 2 MOT Test as efficient as possible, then your best option is always going to be equipment that has been designed for the job. Importantly, the Class 1 & 2 test does not currently include an emissions test, so that’s one costly piece of equipment that’s not needed.

The key equipment required for the Class 1 & 2 MOT Test includes:

• A ‘connected’ motorcycle brake tester*
• A headlamp beam tester
• A motorcycle work bench – Important for motorcycle inspection and any necessary remedial work but a recommendation only, not a requirement for a motorcycle MOT bay
• We also offer motorcycle tyre changers and wheel balancers, which you may also wish to consider, for remedial work

Class 4 & Class 7

The equipment required for Class 4 and Class 7 MOT Testing is fundamentally the same – the test covers the same things but Class 4 vehicles (with a gross vehicle weight less than 3,000 kg) are smaller and lighter, so Class 4 vehicle lifts and brake testers need slightly less size and weight capacity than Class 7.

Class 7 covers commercial vehicles with a gross weight between 3,000kg to 3,500kg. They’re bigger and heavier than Class 4 vehicles, so the vehicle lift needs to be bigger all-round and capable of lifting a heavier vehicle; the brake tester also needs the capacity to assess the function of the brakes on a heavier vehicle. Beyond that, the equipment required for Class 7 testing is the same as for Class 4.

Equipment required for Class 4 and Class 7 MOT testing includes:

• Automated Test Lane (ATL) vehicle lift with associated accessories (Jacking Beam, Radius Plates, Play Detectors/Shaker Plates)
• ‘Connected’ Roller brake tester and decelerometer*
• ‘Connected’ exhaust emissions test equipment*
• Headlamp beam tester

There are a number of suitable lift options available to you and our expert team of MOT Specialists are happy to advise you on the best equipment and MOT bay layout for your specific needs. You may even wish to consider a Dual Revenue MOT Bay, which includes a dual purpose wheel alignment and MOT lift.
