Britain’s Millionth Electric Car Hits the Road

The last couple of years haven’t exactly been ones to remember for car makers. With supply issues to contend with and an uncertain economic climate d, sales haven’t yet reached pre-pandemic levels.

Things are beginning to look. According to the SMMT’s latest new car registration figures, 4.6% more new vehicles hit the roads this September compared with the same month last year.

However, compare last month’s figure against 2019’s and the difference remain stark: 34.4% more vehicles were registered in September of that year.

Bumper year for EVs
September did bring one significant bit of good news for car makers, though: Britain’s millionth electric car has hit the road.

Though new car registrations are down overall on pre-pandemic levels, 2022 has been a bumper year for the EV. As of the end of September, 249,575 had been registered so far this year, transforming Britain’s roads for good.

Reflecting on the figures, SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said: “September has seen Britain’s millionth electric car reach the road – an important milestone in the shift to zero emission mobility. Battery electric vehicles make up but a small fraction of cars on the road, so we need to ensure every lever is pulled to encourage motorists to make the shift if our green goals are to be met.

“The overall market remains weak, however, as supply chain issues continue to constrain model availability. Whilst the industry is working hard to address these issues, the long-term recovery of the market also depends on robust consumer confidence and economic stability.”
